TALES FROM THE SEA 'Fishing Report' '08'
3/26/08  Back water trip, to rough for the ocean. Jimmy,Cameron & Lonnie were troopers! Caught whiting, croaker & black drum. 1 flounder about 6". Visited Cameron's island. Little early in the year but had a great time.

4/10/O8  Back water trip. 1/2 day charter with Sam, John, Harrison & Sam. Great catch of bull whiting for an early spring trip. Also one nice shark and one grey trout. These guys are a great team! Ended the day with a little Southport waterfront cruise for Sherry, Kelly & Amelia Grace. What a great day!

4/26/08 Had the honor of teaching Flounder fishing from a boat, the pier and the surf to a group of ladies at the Annual W.A.I.T program today. W.A.I.T. stands for Women Anglers In Training and is a yearly program put on by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation and N.C. Sportsman's Magazine. The class was huge and we had a ball. Ladies, if you want to know more about fishing this is where to come!

4/28/08 Today was the second part of the W.A.I.T. program. The girls get to go out and try out what they learned! I took a group of three, Mondie, Daphene and Mercy. Started out buy giving Mondie her first visit to the ocean by boat. Had to sneak it in on her though! After that we went fishing and the girls showed to be pretty darn good fisher-women! They caught Red Drum, Black Drum, huge Croaker, a few Spots and even a Spec. Trout! Not a bad day for a bunch of 'Girls Gone Fishing'!

5/22/08 Half day trip today, went searching for Trout and those early Flounder. Howard & Carol fished hard and we finally found a few Flounder! Only one keeper though. Never did find out where the Trout we're hiding but we had a great time. Even Penny their dog had a good time.

5/25/08 Spanish are one the beach! After Church Mike and I went out to catch a few. Got out a little to late, the ocean turned nasty and we didn't get to fish. Good gosh there's a lot of people here! Will try again tomorrow!

6/12/08 WOW, Fished with these WV boys from daylight til dark! Trout bite lasted until we ran out of bait, caught about 70 Trout, kept enough for dinner. They also had a blast w/Sharks, blues, lady fish and then we had to troll for Spanish! The fish are here guys, book your trip. Thanks John, Matt, Cliff & Chad for a great day on the water!

6/14/08 Today I had the treat of taking a great family fishing for Fathers Day. Gus, Josh and Sophia Marano and Josh's girlfriend Valeri Bowen. Only a half day but all caught trout, about 40 I believe! Hats off to those taking home only enough for dinner! We all want our grandchildren catching fish too!!! We trolled a little for Spanish, caught one nice one on the way back in. Congrats to Sophia for Graduating, turning 18 and joining the National Guard, also to Josh for serving in the Coast Guard. Thanks guys, had a ball!

6/26/08 The mullet are showing up in the backwater in numbers. Trout bite holding tight. Fished the reef today with no luck on the Flounder. It won't be long though!

6/27/08 Today's all day trip paid off. Lonnie caught a nice catch of Flounder and Jullian caught a whopper Spec. Trout.
Johnny also caught flounder but no keepers. Lots of small Flounder around, a good sign for the season! This was a special trip for me and the guys know why. Thanks guys for a great day!

6/28/08 High wind kept this trip inside but the guys did a great job and Jimmy, Johnny, Lonnie, Jullian, Joseph and Cameron caught a mixed bag of Flounder, Trout, Sheepshead, Black drum, croaker and Cameron even caught a double. His first cast out in one spot he reeled in a flounder on one hook and a croaker on the other! This was his first flounder! Several of the guys caught their first flounder today and I'm proud they we're with me! This was Joseph's first trip in salt water and he did a great job reeling in a lot of croaker. Remember, it's a great thing to take a child fishing, it creates wonderful memories and gives them something to enjoy for a life time!

6/30/08 Just a little note: Most of my clients are choosing to only keep a mess of fish to enjoy for supper! This has been enjoyable for me knowing that hopefully we be a part of keeping the fish here for many seasons to come! Thanks to you all!

7/2/08  Light winds allowed me to get on Yaupon reef today, a short flounder bite yielded 3 nice flounder! Quiet a few misses, one real nice one pulled me under structure and I was never able to get him out. Stopped by Yaupon Pier and picked up a nice Trout and Red Drum on white Gulp Shrimp, even a keeper Black Bass. Mullet are thick in the back of creeks, pogies are scarce!

7/11/08   OK Guys, the Flounder are chomping and I have no Charters right now. Call me and book a trip or I'll just have to catch'em all myself!!! Check out today's catch on the 2008 Trips & Catches page!!!

7/23/08  Well I guess the biggest thing I caught today was myself, treble hook to the leg! Pushing the barb on through and clipping it off really does work! Just about made Mike sick, but it works! What an hour fishing!!! 23 NICE trout in 1 hour! Check out the Trips and catches page for pictures!!! Didn't have time for flounder today but I'll be back at them tomorrow!!!

7/24/08   Another Great day for the Spec. Trout! Took little Christian Stiller trout fishing for the first time, my gosh, he caught'em up!  We caught 30 Spec. & 1 Lg. grey trout. Christian caught the largest spec. & the lg. grey! If only all days were this good! I guess all that counts is that it's that good now!

7/25/08  Today I had the pleasure of taking some old friends, Mildred & Cowman Blackwelder on a half day trip. We caught up on a lot of news and caught a few blues, spec. trout and other bottom fish.

7/29/08  Had a trip today, took Jimmy, son Kelly and Bobby 1/2 day fishing. We had a great time, but not many fish. Went to the reef, seas rolled pretty good. One got sick and had to return. Fished back water a little but only a few blues. Tide was very low and weather was Hot. Will be taking them again soon!

7/31/08 Had 2 half day trips today! The first was the Hubric family, Tom, Kim and three beautiful little girls, Courtney, Camryn & Ella. These girls fished hard and ended up with 10 fish each which we released back to the sea. I hope they remember this day and always want to fish! By the way, this group were from Mohnton, Pa.

The second trip was the Morrill family, Will, Max & Jim. They had a few of their friends with them, Shane, Lynette and Susan. Susan tried so hard for a flounder but caught a large sheepshead (the highlight of our day)! We caught many bottom fish and Will caught a nice black drum. The trip was a good one and I really enjoyed fishing with this crew from Charlotte, NC my hometown!

8/2,3,4/08  Good gosh, these guys fished my socks off! Two of the days were filled with spec. trout, grey trout, black drum, flounder & red drum. Great backwater fishing, it just doesn't get much better! One day was spent on the reef where their just weren't any fish. One flounder was all we could pull off. That's the way it goes guys, some days just are not good but it beats a 9 to 5 any day! We did get little 7 mo. old Trip out to catch his first fish ever and that was a privilege for me. Thanks, Holly, Chip & Trip Puffenbarger, Timmy Alexander and Heather Dellinger all from Stanley, NC. It was my pleasure!

8/7/08  Don't know if you guys know, but NautiGirl Charters does scenic cruises and today I had the special privilege of taking a group on one. It was nice calm day and the dolphin put on a show for us in the waterway! Charlotte, I hope you enjoyed you special day, I sure did!

8/9/08  Today was the second day Geraldine Kirk and family, Keith, Jane, Charlotte & William chartered the boat and it was for fishing this time. We had a ball, caught an assortment of fish in the backwater and had a wonderful day.

8/15/08  Had the pleasure today of fishing with Phil Coppola and sons Scott & Ross from Indian Trail, NC. Well it wasn't the exciting fishing day I expected but all three did catch flounder and one red drum was caught. The fish may not have cooperated as much as I wanted but the guys were great! Thanks guys, hope to see you next year!

8/18/08  Took some old friends from Thomasville fishing today, David & Sherrie Holshouser. Finally got out to the reef! Caught some blues, a couple flounder and a Spanish. Lost a few big somethings, but over all had a pretty good day! Great company! Thanks guys!

8/19/08  Today was supposed to be a full day Spanish charter with David Hoovler and friends Matthew & Dee from NY. We got out early and trolled for Spanish. Didn't take long to find them, out from Yaupon Pier. We caught pretty good for a while, then the wind changed. The ocean got rough and the fish turned off! Sorry guys! We cut the trip in half and called it a day. I really enjoyed fishing with you guys and hope to see you next year!

8/26/08  Had a 1/2 day charter today with Charles Christianson, his daughter Beth and friend Dick from St. James, NC. The day started out with a bang, Charles caught a 23" Red drum, then Beth with a 25" red drum! Not long after that Dick came in big with an 18" Flounder! Not bad for a dead low tide! We fished the next 2 hours without a fish! Lots of bites but no fish. That's how it goes sometimes, that's fishing! Over all a pretty good catch for these guys! What times supper?

8/31/08 & 9/1/08  Flounder was what we were looking for and flounder was what we got! A nice almost 5 pound er was caught by Chip Puffenbarger 8/31 along with several others. On 9/1 Capt. V ended up with 2 close to 4 lbs. each and several more in the 3lb. range.

9/2/08  Spent all day looking for the flounder, wind changed to the NE and the fish just did not bite! Did catch one Jack that put up a pretty good fight and Holly Puffenbarger caught a pretty nice grey trout. I guess the highlight of the day was taking little 7 mth old Trip on his first all day fishing trip! He was a ball and handled it just fine.

9/12/08  As you know, tropical storm Hannah came to town and messed up all the water! Well even though fishing's not been so good, these guys, John McKinney & Lonnie Blackmon just had to go fishing! Well we trolled for king a while with no results, the guys wanted to catch something BIG so we decided to go Shark fishing. Did pretty good! John landed a black tip about 60 lbs. and Lonnie topped that off with about a 100 lb. catch and release!

9/29/08  Took David Rose of Oak Island fishing today. Even though not many are being caught we lucked up on some nice King Mackerel! One 30 pound er and one about 25 Lbs. A great day fishing!

9/30/08  I have to tell you that I have never seen the King's put on a show like they did today!!! We probably saw 30 or 40 King's sky rocket baits, I mean 10 to 20 feet out of the water! David Rose went again today and caught his limit! I even got to catch on of these beauties! We fished til sundown, the ocean finally gave in, calmed down from the storms, cleared up and it was an awesome day on the water! Don't get many of days like these!

10/4/08  Had the pleasure of fishing today with my nephew Justin Martin and his friend Jason Sing. We fished Yaupon Reef and caught a large assortment of fish! Grey Trout, Big Blues, Croaker & Spec. Trout. We also laid our eyes on the biggest shark I have ever seen!  The shark was about 14 or 15 foot and his head was about 3 yo 4 foot across! He was just calmly swimming by the boat.

10/6/08 Wow! Today we fished in the afternoon and my Dad caught his first King Mackerel! I was proud that he caught it fishing with me. It takes team work to catch a King so I don't want to leave out the fact my husband Mike is my mate when King fishing and did a great job helping Dad catch his first.

10/6/08 I have fished constantly for 7 days now, backwater, ocean & creeks. I have found that their is a lot of fish to be found but not constantly. In those 7 days I have fished all live baits & artificial baits and have caught an assortment of fish in many different places. The hardest to find being the flounder! Only one in 7 days. Don't know yet what is going on there but I'm trying to figure it out. It's been a crazy season for fishing.

10/7/08  Started the day with Janel Devall of Livingston, LA (celebrating her 50th birthday) and daughter Jodie Devall of Lincolnton, NC on a half day Dolphin watching tour. It was a blast, these ladies got to play with the Dolphin for quiet a while. Janel almost got to touch one! The waether turned pretty rough and the ladies got a little wet, but we ended the trip with a few pictures of the Prices Creek Lighthouse.
The second half of the day was a backwater trip with Sam & Sherry William's of Charlotte, NC. These guys are always a pleasure to fish with! I wanted to take them out towards Bald Head but the weather just didn't permit that so we fished around the backwater creeks. Usually pretty good fishing here, just didn't pan out. Sherry caught a small flounder and there were many croaker and pinfish caught. Some days are just like that! Did hang one nice grey trout before heading in. Thanks to both families for some good fun on the water!

10/8/08  Got into the ocean today, brought one nice King on board. Stopped at the reef for a few grey trout. The sea was fierce (4 to 5 foot swells) but not bad for a few hours fishing!

10/15/08  Sorry I've gotten a little behind in my reporting! Been fishing everywhere. Fished 3 days straight, artificial bait, caught 22 flounder in backwater 2 keepers! Have been tearing up the grey trout, nearshore & backwater! Spec. trout are showing up and looks like it's going to be a great winter for them! Today I fished the reef catching a limit of grey trout and a 22 lb. red drum. You can still charter  and the fishing is great in the winter too!

10/26/08 Trout are still here in numbers! Took some old freinds fishing and Heather Dellinger from Stanley, NC caught her first red drum.

10/29/08 Had the pleasure of taking Lynn Stewart, brother Jerry Stewart, John Hubbard and Randy Phillip's out today. Lynn Stewart is from Lexington, NC. (Umm, good bar-b-que) We were supposed to go out yesterday and the weather did not permit. The day started out great for me, catching spec. trout but I picked them up at 1:00pm for their 1/2 day trip and the trout had shut down. You know me, I do not give up so we went to another place and ended up fishing till almost dark catching grey trout. I think it turned out pretty well. We had a good time and the guy's ended up with a pretty good mess of fish. PS, Randy, I hope your head is ok. Ha Ha

10/31/08 Mike and I did pretty well with the spec. trout, catching our limit in about an hour this morning. Also we have caught our limits in grey's the past few days!

11/2/08 Took one of my favorite kids fishing today! Christain Stiller (son of NC House Rep. Bonner Stiller) is one great little fisherman. We fished Yaupon Reef and Christain caught some really nice grey trout and a keeper black bass! The cool thing is when we got back in he cleaned every fish himself and said he was taking them to a friend of his (the oldest native in Southport!)

11/5/08  Fished for grey trout, limited out in about 2 hours!

11/26/08 Had a great half day trip today! Julie McManus, her brothers Steve and Bob and her Dad Lou all caught fish! We limited out on Grey trout and had a great time doing so. The Pelicans are starving I think, Dad nearly got every fish he caught eaten by one! We were fishing Mcglamery Reef using cut bait!

12/30/08 WOW, the Bluefin have arrived! Spent half the day on the dock watching the huge fish being weighed in! Mike caught a 300 pounder! There were 16 fish weighed in the largest being 467 pounds after being dressed out! Don't let anyone tell you that the fishing stops here! There's always something to catch!!!

12/31/08 Well folks it's the last day of the year and the fishing is still hot around Oak Island! Trout are still being caught in numbers and are expected to be even larger in Jan. Take advantage of my special offer '1/2 PRICE FISHING TRIPS FROM NOW THROUGH FEB. 15TH!' Just call to book!!!
